    SPORTS MASSAGE

Sports Massage is a manual therapy using a variety of techniques to normalise muscle tissue before, after or even during an event or game. Sports massage focuses on areas of the body that become overused and stressed from repetitive and often aggressive movements. Using developed massage techniques, sports massage therapy is now used by athletes and individuals as part of their normal balanced training regimen.

Sports massage therapy can be used as a means to:

    • Reduce recovery time for maximum performance during training or after an event
    • Enhance event or race preparation
    • Improve flexibility and reduce fatigue
    • Improve endurance and prevent further injury in the future

    MUSCLE ENERGY TECHNIQUES

Muscle energy is a direct and active technique; meaning it engages a restrictive barrier and requires the patient’s participation for maximal effect.

As the patient performs an isometric contraction, the following physiologic changes occur:

    • Sensory neuron activation results in direct inhibition of agonist muscles
    • A reflexive reciprocal inhibition occurs at the antagonistic muscles
    • As the patient relaxes, agonist and antagonist muscles remain inhibited allowing the joint to be moved further into the restricted range of motion

Studies have shown that muscle energy techniques may significantly decrease disability and improve functionality in patients with disorders such as low back pain.

    TRIGGER POINT TECHNIQUES

Trigger point techniques are used to release or releave areas of muscle or fascia (myofascia) that have gone into a consistent contracted state. Myofascia means muscle tissue (myo) and the connective tissue in and around it (fascia). Myofascial pain often results from muscle injury or repetitive strain. When stressed or injured, muscles often form trigger points, like contacted knots, that cause pain and tightness. Trigger points usual give some form of referral pattern, for example trigger points in the neck can radiate pain to the skull and cause headaches. Treatment is specific to the area of dysfunction and can range from direct pressure work to positional release. The aim of treatment is to ‘reprogramme’ the tissue into relaxing.

    NEUROMUSCULAR THERAPY (NMT)

Neuromuscular therapy (NMT) is a form of soft tissue manual therapy, pressure is applied to the skin with the aim of stimulating specific areas of skeletal muscle.

Often these areas of muscle are myofascial trigger points. NMT is a comprehensive program of soft tissue manipulation techniques that balance the central nervous system (brain, spinal column and nerves) with the structure and form of the musculoskeletal system. NMT is based on neurological laws that explain how the central nervous system maintains homeostatic balance.
